Florida A&M University (FAMU) Football Game Day Cover Illustration Series
For each home game of the 2019 football season, I created an illustration for each game featuring our mascot, Venom or the Marching 100. Each illustration was designed with a comic book theme in mind and was designed based on the feel of each matchup. EX: FAMU v Southern is a huge band rivalry, which is why the two drum majors are prominently featured on the cover.
2021 Orange Blossom Classic
I followed up the initial iteration of the Game Day cover series in 2021 with the revival of the Orange Blossom Classic. This game featured Florida A&M, led by Coach Willie Simmons, vs Jackson State, led by Coach Prime (Deion Sanders), and was a headlining match-up. Given the gravity of the game, I wanted to go for a cover that was a little more provocative, so I drew Coach Simmons playing chess while Coach Prime was playing checkers. Unfortunately, JSU won the game, but the cover was a hit nonetheless.
2024 Celebration Bowl
With FAMU making its first appearance in the Celebration Bowl and having a near-perfect season, I created two illustrations to help add to the spirit of the game. With it being such a high-profile game, I wanted to be a little provocative but not too much, given my previous experience with that style. After we won the game, I went all in and created an illustration showing Venom roasting a lemon pepper bison (since the game was in Atlanta), and it got a great response from the fans.
Jonathon Ferrell
This illustration was done in memoriam to Jonathon Ferrell, who was a FAMU football player whom a police officer in Charlotte, NC, unjustly killed. During the events of 2020, I wanted to create art commemorating people who were lost to police violence. Since I was a FAMU student then, I felt that Jonathon Ferrell was a perfect blend of honor and education to share more about his story.
Bob "Bullet" Hayes
This illustration was done in memoriam to Bob "Bullet" Hayes, a legendary football player and track athlete who attended Florida A&M. He played in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys and won a gold medal in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2009.
Ken Riley
This illustration was done in memoriam to Ken Riley, a legendary football player who attended Florida A&M. He played in the NFL for the Cincinnati Bengals and retired with the 4th most interceptions ever. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2023,
